Here are our five top tips for successful potty and toilet time.
Potty training can be hit and miss, literally! Most children start potty and toilet training between 18 and 30 months, with most children staying dry by the age of four.
If you’re embarking on potty training, here are our top tips:
• There’s no perfect time to start potty or toilet training but when your child shows an awareness of their bowel movements and a desire to be dry and clean is a good time to start.
• Leave a potty where your little one can see it and say what it’s for. Alternatively, some children want to start using the toilet – just like grownups – straight away. If they have a bowel movement at a certain time each day, remove their nappy and suggest they sit on the potty or toilet. If they’re upset by the idea, don’t force them but wait a few weeks before attempting again.
• It’s easier to potty train in summer as there are fewer layers to remove, clothes dry quicker and, if they’re pottering around outside without their nappy, the odd accident won’t matter.
• Making a fuss if they have an accident may cause your child to become anxious about the potty or toilet, so take it in your stride and give lots of praise when they are successful.
• Try not to compare your child to others; kids get dry in their own time.
