In a Flutter about Butterflies
Seeing butterflies fluttering here and there is a sure sign that summer is here. To show the children the magic of metamorphosis, we installed a butterfly garden in our Pre-school room.
We all watched intently as a handful of very hungry green caterpillars grew over ten days before forming chrysalises.
The chrysalises took a further ten days to harden before we transferred them to a holding log to complete their transformation. After a few days, we were excited to watch the Painted Lady butterflies emerged.
After the butterflies dried their wings and had a jolly good feed, we completed the cycle by releasing them in the nursery garden.
