What We’ve Been Up To!

Younger and Older Babies Enjoy Outdoors

The long summer days are finally here! Our youngest children have been making the most of the sunshine and enjoying time outdoors. One of their favourite things to do is to visit our local park. Here we spend time spotting and talking about the local wildlife, including visiting a family of growing baby ducks.

The nursery garden is also the ideal space to enjoy sensory play. The babies love our mud kitchen, bubble play and, of course, sploshing in our water trays full of boats and squirty sea creatures. Our flower beds are alive with colour at the moment, and the babies particularly love spotting buzzy bees and butterflies.

Making potato prints

Indoors, we’ve been reading classic stories like The Hungry Caterpillar and Where’s Spot? as well as singing nursery rhymes like Pat A Cake, Pat A Cake and Old MacDonald Had a Farm. The babies have also been making prints with objects, like vegetables. All this play usually follows by a well-deserved nap!

Toddlers Become Curious Scientists

Over the last few months our toddlers have enjoyed a variety of exciting and educational activities. Highlights include doing fun science experiments designed just for them. We’ve been watching bubbling baking soda and vinegar volcanoes erupt and experimenting with mixing colours and creating a ‘rainbow in a jar’. As well as hands-on, these activities are great for sparking curiosity and discovering how materials react to each oth

Now the sun (and us) has our hat on, the toddlers have also been spending time playing in our nursery garden. We encourage the children to help grow and nurture the garden.

Vegetables we’ve planted together – and are actively growing – are baby carrots, strawberries, and scented herbs. Getting little ones involved in gardening is a great way to teach them about plant growth and how to take care of them, as they water and care for their seedlings.

The toddlers have also been learning about underwater creatures and, to bring the theme to life, we created a cardboard of aquarium full of colourful fish. Well done children!

Pre-Schoolers Prepare for School

With September approaching, our oldest pre-schoolers have been busy preparing for starting primary school. We are exceptionally proud of how far they have come in the last few months and the raft of new skills they’ve learnt.

Under our school-readiness programme, we cover all educational and emotional aspects of starting school. This includes aspects, such as practising Jolly Phonics – a method teaching letter sounds to help them build words – recognising and writing their names and holding a pencil correctly. We also help them learn independence, for example, knowing how to use the bathroom, and putting their coat and shoes on.

Helping the children develop their own ‘sense of self’ is important for building confidence and feeling comfortable when starting school. Under the ‘All About Me’ module, we spend time encouraging them to talk about themselves, their likes and dislikes, and their emotions. This helps the children to communicate their needs in an unfamiliar setting, and take simple actions, such as putting their hand up to go to the toilet or answer a question.

Of course, nursery is all about learning through play, so all these activities are carried out in a way which maximise the fun factor. Playing games, making cakes, talking about our families at circle time, it all feeds into being school-ready!

We’re so proud of you and wish you the very best of luck for the next chapter of your learning journey.

Helping Littles One Settle In: Our Five Top Tips for Easing Separation Anxiety

Hello Parents,

We know that starting nursery is a big step for both you and your little one. It’s also completely normal for children (and you!) to feel a bit anxious when they first start, but don’t worry we’re here to help. The Riverside Day Nursery’s team of hands-on, experienced child carers has put together some top tips to soften the transition and make future drop-offs a breeze!

1.     Gradual Introduction to the Nursery

Introduce nursery into your routine gradually. Start with short visits where you stay with them. For example, we offer up to five settling in sessions over two weeks. You can stay for the first session for anywhere between one to three hours, depending on how comfortable your little one feels. Gradually increase the duration of your visits but spend less time in the room each time. This will help your little one build familiarity and security in the new setting.

Also, know that it’s completely normal for children to get upset at drop off, especially in the first few weeks but it will get better!

2. Regular Goodbye Routine

Create a consistent, comforting goodbye routine. This might be a special hug, goodbye phrase, or a reassuring activity that is the same each time. Also, reinforce that you will be coming back to collect them. Making this routine consistent will let your little one know what to expect, reducing anxiety.

3. Comfort Items

Let your child bring a comfort item from home, such as a favourite blanket or stuffed animal (make sure it has your child’s name on it!). Familiar items give a sense of security, helping to soothe and comfort them throughout the day.

4. Positive Reinforcement

We get it, drop-off can be stressful, especially in the morning if you have other children to drop-off and/or need to head to work. However hectic, try to keep the journey calm and positive. If tensions are rising, try playing or singing their favourite songs. This will help keep your child’s associations with going to nursery positive.

5. Stay Calm and Patient

It’s important for parents and nursery staff to be calm and understanding, especially early on. Acknowledging your child’s feelings without showing impatience will help build trust.

We’re also here to support new starters and spend time giving them extra comfort and show them interesting activities to distract and settle them. You’ll be amazed how quickly an activity like dress ups or finger painting turns tears to smiles!

Engaging actives helps turn tears to smiles in no time!

Welcome Back from The Riverside Day Nursery

Dear Parents,

Yes, it’s been a while crocodile, but we’re back and delighted to share what the children have been up to.

We’ve had numerous celebrations including Easter, Father’s Day, Holi Festival, and, most recently, our glittering Graduation ceremony. As ever there was a fantastic turnout, and we were thrilled – if a little teary – to see our pre-schoolers ready to take their next step up to primary school.

Our unique pre-school readiness programme is ideal for equipping children with the skills and confidence to start school. From tying shoelaces, to writing their own name, we’re so proud that they have what it takes to navigate this transition.

We will miss you and wish you the very best of luck on your next learning adventure.

Best wishes,

The Riverside Nursery Team

Diwali Lights up the Riverside Day Nursery

The nursery was awash with colour during Diwali in November.

To celebrate the Hindu five-day Festival of Lights, we made Rangoli – ornate designs of coloured rice – and pretty paper lamps (‘Diya’). The nursery rooms looked magical glowing with lights.
